Weather Monitoring and Service Update January 5, 2026

Light Snow

On Time

Paramount Snow Management teams monitored a weather system that began around 6:00 AM on January 5, 2026. Snowfall across all regions of the GTA totaled approximately 1 cm, with snow ending around 9:00 AM. Temperatures rose to approximately 1°C throughout the day, and residual salt from previous applications, combined with warming temperatures, assisted in breaking down remaining snow accumulation.  Teams were initially prepared for a full plow service followed by a salt run; however, this weather event did not materialize to the forecasted levels. As a result, service levels were adjusted, and a salt service run was performed to address light accumulation and potential slippery conditions.

Teams deployed across all GTA regions beginning at 9:00 AM. Due to daytime conditions and traffic impacts, service progression continued throughout the day.

SERVICE NOTES – SALT SUPPLY UPDATE:
Southern Ontario continues to experience a province-wide salt shortage due to increased winter demand and supply chain disruptions, with municipalities being prioritized. Salt suppliers opened their depots on January 5; however, access to salt remained limited and quantities were restricted. As a result, salt applications were completed based on available material supply.

Paramount Snow Management continues to secure materials as they become available and deploy services strategically to prioritize safety. In some cases, service timing and methods may be adjusted to ensure the most effective and responsible use of available materials.

All salt service routes were completed by approximately 6:00 PM on January 5, 2026.

Teams remain on standby for further servicing required.  We are also monitoring another system that is a potential for January 6, 2026 which is forecasted to begin around 10 am on January 6 with a potential for freezing rain before changing to mixed precipitation and temperatures on the rise.  When the potential weather episode begins temperatures are just below freezing sitting at 0 and temperatures are on the rise to above freezing with rain with a high of 2 degrees.
