Major Snowfall Event — January 25–26, 2026
Paramount Snow Management teams have completed service operations related to the major winter storm that impacted the Greater Toronto Area on January 25, 2026, which has been identified as one of the largest snowfall events the GTA has experienced in more than 10 years.
Storm Overview
The storm began around 8:00 AM on January 25, 2026, bringing heavy and sustained snowfall across all regions of the GTA. Snowfall continued throughout the day and evening, tapering off in most regions by approximately 2:00 AM on January 26, 2026.
Across the GTA, snowfall accumulations ranged between 35 and 45 cm over the duration of the event. Snowfall rates were heavy at times, contributing to rapid accumulation and extremely challenging service conditions.
Service Timeline
-
1:00 PM – January 25, 2026:
All Snow Management teams were deployed and began the first round of plowing. -
2:00 AM – January 26, 2026:
The first full plow round was completed across all properties, and teams immediately transitioned into the second round of plowing. -
1:00 PM – January 26, 2026:
All properties received a second full plow service. Completion occurred slightly later than originally anticipated due to continued snowfall during second passes, daytime traffic conditions, and unavoidable mechanical challenges. -
9:00 PM – January 26, 2026:
All properties were fully completed, including two full plow services, a salt service run, and a final tidy-up pass during salting.
Despite mechanical issues and extreme working conditions, all sites were serviced in full.
Crew Effort & Conditions
Our teams worked tirelessly and continuously throughout this major snow event. With snowfall volumes of this magnitude, progress was physically demanding, and conditions remained extremely challenging for the duration of the storm. While we can only push crews so far under these conditions, all teams continued moving through assigned routes safely, steadily, and professionally.
Temperature & Salt Effectiveness
Temperatures throughout the event remained well below freezing, ranging between –12°C and –14°C, with wind chill values making conditions feel closer to –25°C.
At temperatures below –7°C, traditional white salt begins to lose effectiveness, as it requires warmer conditions to activate. While salt was applied to improve traction and safety, melting response times were slower due to these frigid temperatures.
Salt Supply Update
Southern Ontario continues to experience a province-wide salt shortage, impacting private contractors across the GTA. Paramount Landscaping Inc., along with many other contractors, has been required to use salt carefully and strategically to ensure coverage across all properties while maintaining safety standards.
Road & Travel Conditions
Road conditions throughout the GTA were extremely hazardous for much of the day and overnight period. In many areas, municipal plows had not yet been able to clear roadways, contributing to delays and difficult travel conditions for both crews and the public.
