Weather Monitoring Update

Paramount Snow Management teams are closely monitoring a potential weather system forecasted for the evening hours of February 28, 2026.  Across all regions of the GTA, beginning around 10:00 PM and ending by midnight on March 1, 2026 there is a chance of scattered flurries, with anticipated accumulation of less than 1 cm at this time.

Temperatures remain below freezing, currently ranging between –5°C and –8°C, depending on the region.

Temperature & Salt Effectiveness

With temperatures dipping to –7°C and below, it is important to note that traditional white road salt begins to lose effectiveness. Salt requires sufficient moisture and slightly warmer surface temperatures to properly activate and break down ice.

At temperatures below –7°C:

  • Melting action slows significantly

  • Surfaces may remain icy longer

  • Additional time may be required for salt to activate

Our teams factor these conditions into deployment decisions to ensure material is used effectively and responsibly.

Salt Supply Update — Southern Ontario

Southern Ontario continues to face a significant regional salt shortage due to sustained winter demand, repeated storm systems, and ongoing supply chain constraints. Municipalities continue to receive priority allocation, which has placed additional strain on landscape and snow removal contractors across the GTA.

Salt depot inventories remain:

  • Limited and inconsistent

  • Frequently depleted without notice

  • Subject to allocation caps

  • Increasingly difficult to secure, especially overnight

Salt is becoming increasingly scarce to find and secure. Many suppliers are operating with reduced inventory levels, and product access can vary day-to-day and hour-to-hour. Contractors are often required to travel outside their primary service regions to secure supply, increasing operational strain and timelines.

This ongoing shortage continues to place significant pressure on landscape and snow management companies across Southern Ontario. Paramount Snow Management is working diligently and proactively with multiple suppliers to secure material; however, availability remains unpredictable.

Salt applications must therefore be:

  • Strategically timed

  • Carefully deployed

  • Used responsibly to maximize effectiveness

We appreciate your continued understanding as we navigate these supply challenges while prioritizing safety.

All teams are currently on standby should servicing be required across any region. Our snow management teams will continue monitoring both site conditions and forecast updates throughout this potential weather episode.
