Shrub & Hedge Pruning

When shrub & hedge pruning is performed properly, it enhances the beauty of almost any tree and shrub. Improper pruning can ruin plant life or greatly reduce its landscape potential. In most cases, it is better not to prune than to do it incorrectly. Pruning, like any other skill, requires proper training to achieve success.

More trees are killed or injured each year from improper pruning than from pests.

Pruning is the removal or reduction of certain plant limbs that are not required, that are no longer effective, or that are of no use to the plant. Prining supplies additional energy to the tree or shrub for the development of flowers, fruits, and limbs that remain on the plant. Our Horticulturally-trained staff is well versed in these procedures and will care for your plant life professionally.

Why do shrubs need professional trimming?

Each species requires special pruning techniques to help them thrive. Many plants that have a natural “globe” shape for example must be pruned at least once a year, or they become too large, and the center becomes nothing but wood. If you try to trim them once they are large, you expose the woody growth below and the plant becomes completely ruined. Our shrub experts understand each species and the special requirements to improve the look, encourage growth and avoid damage.

If you don’t know what you’re trimming, it’s impossible to know what approach is required. As many shrubs have their own growth pattern, you want to ensure the pruning does not destroy their appearance as mentioned above. Fountain-like or vase-like shrubs grow up from the base, such as forsythia and bridal veil spiraea while shrubs such as boxwood and dwarf fothergilla are rounded. Proper pruning respects the natural shape so the plant’s appearance is not altered, and growth continues as it should.
